Renting heavy equipment for a weekend job: what to know before you call

A weekend job is a short window. You have the time off, the weather is cooperating, and the work has to be done by Sunday night. The last thing you want is to spend Saturday morning on the phone figuring out you needed a bigger machine, or standing at the pickup yard wondering how to haul it home. A little thinking before you call makes the whole weekend run better.

Start with the job, not the machine

People often call and ask for a particular machine because they have used one before. Better to describe the work first. How much material needs to move? How far? How tight is the space? What is the ground like? A rental yard can steer you to the right size when you tell them the problem instead of just asking for a model.

Here is how the common machines split up, in general terms.

Matching the machine to the work

Skid-steer loaders are the compact workhorses. They turn in their own length, they push and carry material, and they fit in places a larger loader will not. Good for cleanup, grading small areas, moving gravel and loading trucks. Excavators dig. Trenching for drainage, foundations, ponds, stump removal and loading all call for an excavator, and the size you want depends on how deep and how wide the work goes.

Backhoe loaders do a bit of both, with a loader on the front and a digging arm on the back. They are a common pick for a property owner with a mix of small jobs. Dozers and crawler loaders earn their keep where the ground is soft or sloped, because tracks spread the weight and bite into mud. Tractor and landscape loaders suit property work, from moving topsoil to cleaning up after a storm. Trenchers are made for one job, cutting a narrow trench quickly for lines and drains. Wheel loaders are for moving a lot of material, fast, on firm ground.

Do not forget the support equipment

Utility rentals are easy to overlook and hard to do without. Light plants keep a job going when the sun goes down. Generators run tools where there is no power. Pumps clear water from a trench or a pit, and on a wet site that matters more than anything. Security trailers can help protect a site that is going to sit overnight. Shallenberger Rentals offers light plants, generators, pumps and security trailers along with the heavy machines.

Questions to ask before you reserve

  • Is the machine the right size for the job, and can I fit it on my site?
  • How do I get it there: delivery, or do I need a trailer and a truck that can pull it?
  • What do I need to do to bring it back, including fuel and cleanup?
  • What happens if it breaks down on Saturday morning?

Pickup and return are where weekend rentals go sideways. A skid-steer or an excavator is heavy, and moving it takes the right trailer and the right tow vehicle. If you do not have both, ask about transport before you commit.

Operating it safely

Heavy equipment is not forgiving. If you have never run a machine like it, be honest about your experience when you call, because the people at the yard would rather give you a walkthrough than have you learn on a slope. Know where the underground utilities are before you dig; call 811 before you dig so the lines get marked. Wear the right gear, keep bystanders back, and do not work a slope you are not sure about. If the job is bigger or riskier than you thought, say so, and think about hiring an operator or a contractor instead.

Plan the weekend backward

Work out what has to be finished by Sunday afternoon, and subtract the time you need for cleanup and return. Reserve early rather than the night before, especially in spring and fall when everybody is trying to get something done. Check the forecast, because rain turns many jobs into a mess and some into a postponement. And have your locates, your fuel plan and your hauling sorted before the machine arrives, so the rental hours go into digging.
