STA 3+00 · PAVING AND MILLING

Paving, Asphalt Milling, and Tar and Chip

Paving and resurfacing, asphalt milling and oil and chip from one Connellsville contractor, on projects of any size and scope.

Mill it before you lay over it

Asphalt milling takes the worn surface off a road or lot down to a set depth. Skip it and the new mat goes right over every crack, rut and high spot already there. The surface climbs a little higher with each overlay, and the curb reveal and drainage that were built into the street slowly disappear.

Milling puts the grade back where it belongs before any new asphalt is placed. The milled material can be hauled off and put back to use instead of buried, so you are not paying to bury a surface that still has value.

Good paving starts at the quarry and the plant

SCI has access to quarries and asphalt plants to provide materials for paving and resurfacing, oil and chip, and asphalt milling projects. Hot mix has a short window. It has to get from the plant to the paver while it is still hot, so the haul matters as much as the mix.

Shallenberger Trucking, one of our affiliates, runs tri-axle dump trucks, so we are not waiting on a hired hauler to show up. A paver can only lay what the base under it will carry, which is why soft spots get dug out and repaired before the mat goes down.

Oil and chip when the road calls for it

Oil and chip, also called tar and chip, is liquid asphalt sprayed on the road with a layer of stone chips rolled into it. It costs less than a full hot-mix overlay, it seals the surface against water, and it gives a rural road traction back. It is not the right answer for every road, and a road with a failed base needs more than a chip seal.

We do the paving, the milling and the chip work, so we can tell you which one fits your road instead of selling you the one we happen to offer. Projects of any size and scope, from a single lot to a long stretch of road.
